It doesn't take Greg Walters to get up to speed.
After a disappointing fourth-place finish in Nevada a week prior,
the defending Pacific Coast Fastrak DirtCar Series champion swept
his heat race, the trophy dash and led all 35 laps to win Saturday's
A-Main event at Madras Speedway for the $1,000 top prize.
A series record 21 crate engine dirt late models were on hand at
the 1/4-mile clay oval in Central Oregon.
Second-year driver Jeff Biffle of Vancouver, Washington, the older
brother of NASCAR Nextel Cup Series driver Greg Biffle, set fast
time with Jason Wines of Lebanon, Oregon and Jerry Schram of Vancouver
timing in second and third fast.
In the first 10-lap heat race of the night's racing, outside polesitter
Robby Ireland of Banks, Oregon swept past Biffle for the lead and
Eric Sayre of Vancouver, Washington followed from his fourth-place
start. Ireland and Sayre went after the lead, but Ireland held the
veteran off all 10 laps for the win with Sayre finishing second
and Nevada-winning Steve Suckow in third.
In the second heat, Wines held off hard-charging Scott Puncochar
of Hillsboro, Oregon all 10 laps for the win. Billy Workman Jr.
of Canby, Oregon finished third. Workman pulled double duty by running
with the Madras Super Sports in his 64JR late model and finishing
second in that main.
Walters won the third heat race followed by Schram and Branden Lindberg
of Monroe, Washington. As Lindberg crossed the finish line, he broke
an input shaft coupler, but his crew was able to finish the car
in time for the main event.
Walters led all four laps of the trophy dash for the win followed
by Wines, Ireland and Biffle.
The series had enough cars on hand that a B-Main event was required.
Kevin Rodgers of Banks, Oregon, won the 12-lap race for his first
career late model win. Duane Potter of Condon, Oregon finished second
with hometown Mike Myers in third and J.P. Pagel of Brightwood,
Oregon gaining the final A-Main transfer spot with a fourth-place
finish. Jason Johnson of Gresham, Oregon finished fifth after pressuring
Pagel for fourth on the final lap, but spun coming across the finish
line. Johnson was in his car waiting as the rest of the cars lined
up for the A-Main and when Potter pulled off, and Johnson tagged
on to the A-Main field.
Walters and Wines went two-wide through the first two turns at the
start of the 35-lap A-Main, but Walters cleared Wines going into
turn three. After four caution flags in the first 12 laps, the race
went green flag to the finish. Clicking off laps, Walters lapped
all but the top seven cars. On the lap 12 restart, Sayre, running
third, went past Wines for second. Sayre finished second and Puncochar
moved forward to finish third. Lindberg finished fourth for his
second top-five finish in as many races, and Wines did the same
with a fifth-place finish. Schram came home in sixth with Ireland
in seventh, Ron Prevost of Banks a lap down in eighth, Terry Ferrando
of Salem in ninth and Johnson tying Lindberg for the Hard Charger
Award by finishing 10th. Workman finished 11th followed by Myers,
Suckow, Rogers, Pagel and Biffle.
The series makes its first appearance of the new series at its home
track of Sunset Speedway Park May 12.
